A CHARITY judo competition has raised more than £1,000 for a Maldon foundation.

Blackwater Judo Club hosted the event on Sunday in aid of the David Randall Foundation.

David died of bowel cancer aged 27 on July 6 2012. In his memory, friends and family set up the David Randall Foundation.

The foundation aims to give those with life limiting illnesses the opportunity to live life to the full for as long as possible.

They also aim to support people who show exceptional passion in pursuing their sporting or musical ambitions, but who are held back by their financial situation.

The competition, held at Blackwater Leisure Centre, featured 110 competitors aged eight and above.

Organiser, John Pegram said the event was a big success: “It went absolutely brilliant. Everything went off without a hitch.

“We had Sue Randall from the Foundation who came along to open the event and also give out some of the first place trophies.

“We have raised in the region of £1000 which is fantastic and we can’t thank everyone enough. We had tremendous support from parents, spectators and officials.

“We need to pay thanks also to Plume School who loaned us 150 chairs for the day and to Maldon Community Centre. It was a real community effort to make this a success.

“We hold a charity competition each year. In the past we have done it for Essex Air Ambulance and Little Havens Hospice. This year we went for the David Randall Foundation.

“They held get young people, or people from less well-off backgrounds, involved in sport. That really touched us and we thought we would try and help them out.”
