A MUM has described her horror after her little boy fell 12 feet out of a first floor window while trying to watch a fire engine go past.

Christopher Hay, three, was rushed to Colchester General Hospital after falling out of his mother Kirsty’s bedroom in Head Street, Halstead, last Saturday evening.

Amazingly, although he suffered two small skull fractures, some scratches and a fat lip, Christopher was able to return home on Monday.

Mrs Hay now wants to warn other parents of the potential dangers of open windows.

She said: “My child is lucky, I don’t think the medics expected him to make it to hospital.

“I don’t want another parent to go through that, and hopefully mine and Christopher’s story can stop that.

“It is a miracle that Christopher is okay, the doctors did every test possible to try and find out if something was wrong with him. He has a fat lip, two small fractures in the front of his skull, and maybe half a dozen scratches on his toes, that is it.

“It is miraculous.

“He just seems so unharmed, he came straight home and slept in my bed as if nothing had happened.

“We went out the front of the house and he said ‘look mummy, look how big that window is, aren’t I lucky I didn’t die’.

“He is fully aware of what has happened and how lucky he is.”

Kirsty and Christopher had taken part in the Leigh-on-Sea charity mud run earlier in the day, and Christopher went to his mum’s room to watch a film.

Kirsty said: “About 9pm I finally got to have a shower, Christopher had asked for a glass of juice, which is normally a good sign he is going to sleep.

“He heard a fire engine drive past, basically there is a blind over the window, and the window was open behind. From what Christopher has explained, he tried to put his hands on the window and lean on it to look out, but has fallen straight through.

“It is a big bay window, and the bottom half of the window was open, as it has been since early April with the hot weather we have been having.

"I reckon the window itself starts at probably Christopher’s shin height, and I guess he just kind of toppled out. I have had kids come over and sleep in that room before, and I have closed the window, because I know it is dangerous.

“He has never gone near the window, he has never messed around at the window, he knows that it is dangerous.

“He knows that accidents happen, and this was an accident, a freak accident that could have been so much worse. I am just so thankful he is okay.

“I have taken a lot of slack from people saying ‘how has this happened?’, ‘why have you left your child alone by a window?’. He was in bed, he was safe, this was a freak accident. He is in there every single night.

"I just hope my story can act as a warning to other parents."
