A CHOIR from Maldon has declared its members safe while on tour in Italy following an earthquake that has left at least 38 people dead.

The Choir of St Mary’s Church in Maldon are currently touring Italy, performing as a group in various venues in the country including the capital.

They are currently stationed in the commune of Scheggino, just over 75 kilometres from the epicentre of the quake.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2, struck at 3.36am local time this morning near Accumoli in the centre of the country, 100 kilometres from the capital city of Rome.

The death count is currently at 38 but is expected to rise as more of the rubble is searched.

St Mary’s choir, which currently has around 30 members, stated on Facebook that none of their members had been injured.

They wrote: “Just to let all our friends and families know that we're all fine. It was scary but no damage to speak of here in Scheggino.”
