A KIND-hearted mechanic has come to the rescue of a woman whose car was damaged during a hit and run.

Nina Prior returned home to Chase Court, in Colchester, to find her Subaru Impreza’s bumper smashed and the indicator and side light on the driver’s side of the car damaged.

But there was no sign of who was responsible for the damage and she was initially quoted about £1,000 for the repairs.

However, after an appeal for information in the Gazette and having offered a £250 reward, body work specialist Stewart Dryburgh came forward and offered to do the work for free.

Miss Prior's car has now been repaired and in return, Miss Prior, 41, has made a donation of £250 to the charity, Help Alexia Walk.

Dad-of-three Mr Dryburgh, who runs Dents and Scuffs, in Rowhedge, said: "I looked at the damage and I was thinking 'that £1,000 quote is extortionate'.

"That is the sort of work we would do for £250 easily so I said I was happy to do it for free if that £250 would go to the charity.

"She had no hesitation in saying 'yes' to that."

The 42-year-old added: "We see this sort of thing everyday - people not taking responsibility for what they've done and people being scared to claim on insurance for fear of their premiums going up.

"I'm just glad I could help."

The initial incident took place on Wednesday, June 29.
