A TOP bowls club will pay out hundreds of pounds to have security cameras installed after its turf was wrecked just before the new season.

Frinton Bowls Club members have been working to fix the damage since it was found nearly three weeks ago.

Their new season starts in April and they have been working round the clock to try to fix the holes and areas of torn-up grass.

They are also forking out £800 for new CCTV cameras to stop it happening again.

Club bosses will pay the money themselves from membership fees to make sure the hi-tech gear is installed quickly, but have appealed for help to fund it.

Secretary Richard Roffe has asked Frinton and Walton Town Council for a donation.

He said: “The club is about to take its membership fees for the next year, but the vast majority of that goes on running the club and maintaining the green.

“We agreed we have to get the cameras because the damage was awful.

“We have got one of the very best clubs and greens in the whole of Essex and it needs to be protected.”

The council was unable to make an immediate decision on whether it could stump of some of the cash.

Mr Roffe was advised to apply for a council grant and contact Sport England.
