DEVELOPERS have started work on a controversial retirement complex near Frinton’s seafront.

A plan was first launched two years ago to create flats on the former St Joseph’s Convent site in Raglan Road.

It came under fire from some councillors and residents, with the planned building dubbed a “gross overdevelopment” and out of keeping with the rest of the road.

Various changes were made to the plans, including rotating the building on the site.

Frinton and Walton Town Council continued to object, but developers McCarthy and Stone eventually got the green light at the end of last year.

Work has now started on the building, which will include 14 private apartments, a lounge and a landscaped garden.

It will be finished by the end of the year and should see residents moving in from early 2016.

Neighbouring residents have accepted the complex will be built, but still fear it will create a difficult traffic situation.

Concerns were also raised over the lack of infrastructure to deal with new developments.
