THIS season Colchester’s community stadium might be struggling to provide a winning formula on the pitch with the U’s having won just five games at home.

But it is more than just a sports ground.

The U’s are trying to attract another world-renowned music star to the Weston Homes Community Stadium after Elton John’s sell-out performance last year.

Tim Waddington, the U’s general manager, is in talks with agencies to try to secure a superstar for a gig in 2016 – but their identities are firmly under wraps for now.

He hinted the act the club is looking for similar “old school” acts, with a similar high-profile to Elton.

Mr Waddington said: “It has to be a really good act, as Elton John was so successful.

“It is a good problem to live with. Elton John is not necessarily my cup of tea, but I was really keen to see him because he is such a performance icon in the industry.

“Michael Buble? We were talking about Rod Stewart – someone like Elton John.”

Mr Waddington said some logistical changes would need to be made after lessons were learnt from the Elton John concert, in June last year.

He said: “It would be a real shame not to use the knowledge we have gained and do it again.

“That is a key part of our role as being an entertainment venue.

“The concert was probably a good way of summarising us as part of the community.

There was not a big profit, but it was for the community.

“What we did do is bring an awful lot of people to the stadium, not just from Colchester.

And they went to the restaurants and hotels.”

Mr Waddington said the club was unable to commit to hosting a big concert this summer because, after the Elton John concert, the Football League had considered whether artificial pitches would be installed at grounds.

If they were, the logistics of installing the new pitch would not have allowed for the venue to host a concert in 2015.

It turned out the league voted against the change – but concert fans will still have to wait until next year.
