TWO good Samaritans have been praised for helping two teenage motorcycle crash victims who suffered broken legs.

Ambulance workers have praised the work of the unknown heroes after a collision closed the causeway between Mersea and the mainland for hours.

Ambulance crewmen Michael Lewis and Craig Gaunt arrived at The Strood soon after the crash.

The teenagers had come off a motorbike after a collision with a car. An ambulance and a rapid response ambulance car were both sent to the scene of the incident and the two patients were taken to Colchester General Hospital.

Emergency care assistant Mr Lewis said: “A man was hunched down holding one lad’s leg together and doing the best he could to keep it still.

“It’s really admirable, as lots of people see blood and back off.”

He was being helped by a woman.

Mr Lewis, from Colchester, added: “The lady was continually talking to the patient and calming him down. She came into the ambulance before we left, so the chap had a face he recognised.

“We were praised by the surgeons at the hospital for the condition of the patients, but it was down to these members of the public, sowe just want to pass that on.

“Obviously, I wish we had taken their names. We’d like to say congratulations and well done.”

The crash, which involved a blue Mazda CX5 estate car and a blue Yamaha motorbike, happened in icy conditions at 6.35pm on Sunday, January 18.
