STRUGGLING single mums have been helped back into work thanks to an eight-week programme.

The Colchester Into Work scheme took 26 mums and gave them real-life interview experience and career skills.

Big names such as Debenhams, Williams and Griffin and BT offered their services to help get the women back into work.

Weekly sessions in Lion Walk saw the parents tackle face-toface and phone interviews, undertake work placements and get advice from business people.

The scheme has helped eight people get back into work.

The eight-week scheme was organised by from the Enterprise in Education Partnership and Job Centre Plus.

Jenny Healy, lead programme facilitator at the Enterprise in Education Partnership, said it was the first time the partnership had worked with single parents.

She said: “Job Centre Plus and Enterprise Education started this project together to work with 26 single parents.

“For many of them their children are approaching four years of age and going into education.”

Mrs Healy said the project aimed to build the mum’s confidence.

She said: “It was about raising awareness of the criteria as to what employers expect and the employment skills needed.

“Being a mum is no mean feat – you have to budget, plan and do stress management–all skills employers look for.”

Those involved also got involved in voluntary work in a bid to improve their CVs.

Mrs Healy said they would like to continue to run the project, but it may depend on funding.

She said: “It is rewarding for them and for us as well.

“Even if they haven’t come away with employment, people have gained something from it.

“They have got the skills to go and get a job.”

Job Centre Plus helped to contact people who were suitable for the scheme.

Paul Smith, councillor responsible for business and resources, attended an awards ceremony on Tuesday to recognise the participants work.

He said: “It is good to see how people in the community have come together.

“This scheme has seen eight people go straight back into employment which is fantastic.

“It is helping people get the skills and confidence to take these opportunities."
