APLUCKY teenager from Clacton has launched his own support group after being diagnosed with diabetes.

Alfie Pym, 13, was given the diagnosis by doctors in May.

But the brave youngster quickly came to terms with it and decided to start a group to support others struggling with the condition.

Over the summer, Alfie met MP Douglas Carswell, who gave him advice on how to move forward with his plans.

Since then, the teenager has been working hard to get his group up and running, with the help of mum Nicola Leeks.

Nicola said: “Alfie was OK when he was told. He’s had a couple of bad days and it is an adjustment, but he has done well.

“I’ve had diabetes for 28 years and he’s always known about me doing my daily injections, somaybe it is a bit more natural to him.

“But if people haven’t had any experience with diabetes before, then it can be hard and can be scary.

“Alfie felt really strongly that there should be somewhere that isn’t scary, where children can talk to other children and parents can talk to parents.

“I think it will be incredibly helpful for people to have access to others who are going through the same thing."

The Clacton County High School pupil has found a venue at Valley Farm Holiday Park, Clacton, and plans to hold the first session at the end of February.

Nicola is appealing for help in designing a website for the support group.
