A LAMP post outside Colchester Town Hall was destroyed when a delivery truck reversed into it.
The driver knocked down the concrete post yesterday at 9.30am, smashing the glass lamp on the top.
Workers closed off part of the footpath to clear up the mess.
A Colchester Council spokesman said it is believed the pillar was built at the same time as the Town Hall, in 1902.
She said: “While we cannot be 100 per cent sure, we have early pictures of the Town Hall and it would appear the pillars were erected when it was built.”
The spokesman said the pillar would be rebuilt or replaced.
