POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist suffered serious head injuries in a hit-and-run incident in Colchester.

The 21-year-old student, from Colchester, was making his way across a pedestrian crossing on Colne Causeway when he was hit by a car, thought to be silver Ford Focus or Ford Fiesta.

He crossed one line of stationary cars, but was then struck by the car in the second lane.

The car drove off leaving the cyclist on the ground with serious injuries.

Det Insp Scott Egerton, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We have had a number of drivers who witnessed the collision speak to us and we know that this car was on either a 07 or 57 registration plate,” he said.

“We have recovered the silver wing mirror casing from the driver's side which came off during the collision.

“We believe that the car may possibly have damage to the bonnet and/or windscreen.

“I am appealing for the driver of this car or anyone who sees a car matching this description to contact me.”

The incident happened at 4.40pm on Saturday.

The cyclist, who is a student at Essex University, is being treated at Colchester Hospital. His condition is described as stable.

Anyone who knows where the car should call the Serious Collision Investigation unit on 101 or via email at collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk.
