A unique aerodrome may become home to First World War aircraft permanently, including planes owned by Lord of the Ring’s director, Sir Peter Jackson.

Trustees of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome aim to restore the site to its original 1917 state, including planes from the Great War.

They submitted an application to Maldon District Council in June, for permission to build a temporary hangar to store and maintain the historic aircraft.

Some of the First World War planes are in flying condition, while others will be on permanent display.

Having ‘secure weather tight storage’ is essential to secure the loan of the aircraft, which the applications states ‘are an important part of the historical presentation’ of the site.
