Businesses fear a road closure has stifled passing trade.

The two-mile stretch of Steeple Road between The Street in Latchingdon and Nipsells Chase in Mayland was closed for resurfacing work on Monday, from 7am to 5pm each day.

It was due to re-open today, and work is due to be finished on Tuesday.

Mo Nabi, owner of Mayland Service Station, only found out when he saw the road signs, although Essex County Council said it sent letters to 60 residents and businesses.

He feared he would “not even take ten per cent” of his usual takings this week.

Debbie Tavner, a partner at nearby Mill Motors, said it has not affected booked appointments but could impact on passing trade.

She said: “It makes things quieter because people can’t just call in, they have got to go all the way round, it is a real problem."
