An historic railway station escaped "potential closure" thanks to a last minute exemption to a new EU law.

EU legislation, which is set to increase safety and efficiency of the rail network would have proved costly and difficult for heritage railways including the East Anglian Railway Museum, Chappel and Wakes Colne Station.

The exemption will mean rail transport across Europe will advance, while heritage railways can remain untouched, preserving the history of British railways.

Richard Howitt, Labour MEP for Essex who supported the amendment, said: "These historic railways would have faced potential closure had the UK Independence Party succeeded in blocking our call for heritage railways to be given a specific exemption.

"Now, I can say that our Essex heritage railways are back on track and here to stay."
