A man was rushed to hospital with 80 per cent burns, after a house fire.
A family of four's home in Abels Road, Halstead, has been cordoned off by police following the fire yesterday evening.
The man suffering burns was taken to Broomfield Hospital, where a trauma team was waiting for him.
Another man with smoke inhalation was taken to Colchester General Hospital.
Three ambulance crews and a rapid response crew attended the scene.
Two Halstead fire crews were called to the scene at 8:20pm.
Joyce McCall, neighbour, said: "We saw black smoke. It was billowing out of the back of the house.
"Smoke was coming out of the windows.
"All the neighbours were outside watching."
Peter Robertson, Halstead fire station officer, said: "It was a nasty one."
