A young football fan’s dream came true as he led his favourite team out of the tunnel at Wembley stadium.

Ben Bateman, 12, was selected to be Tottenham Hotspur’s mascot for their FA cup semi-final against Manchester United at the national stadium.

Ben, who suffers from intestinal failure and lives off liquid food, walked out the tunnel alongside Tottenham and England striker and captain Harry Kane.

He also led the pre-match handshakes meaning he was also able to come face-to-face with many of the Manchester United players too.

Ben’s dad, Paul, who went to the match with his son, said: “We had a bit of an ‘in’ because we know someone working at the club.

“We had to arrive three hours early so all the mascots could get their kits on and practice walking out.

“I have to say the staff were fantastic and couldn’t have been more helpful.

“Ben has to be accompanied by myself or his mum wherever he goes in case he needs his emergency pack.

“Everyone was really caring and listened to his needs.

“The players were great as well.

“Obviously they are focused on the game but they gave the mascots high fives when they came into the stadium and said hello.”

After his big moment, Ben, of Crown Street, Castle Hedingham, was able to take his seat and enjoy the match in the stands.

His day ended in disappointment as Spurs slipped to a 2-1 defeat.

However, the result failed to dampen his spirits as his dad said he spent much of the following day telling his school friends about his extraordinary big day out.

Ben said: “I had a great day meeting all the players, especially my favourite Heung-Min Son.

“Leading the team out alongside Harry Kane was amazing because you are hit by a wall of noise as the stadium erupts at the sight of the two teams.

“In the end the only downside was the result.”
