A CAMPAIGNING resident says a speed survey on the road by his home is a “step in the right direction”.

Potential action on Colchester Road, Halstead, was discussed at a meeting of Halstead Town Council on Monday.

Councillor Dave Gronland, Halstead’s representative on the Braintree Council’s local highways panel, said he had been in contact with Essex Highways to informally enquire whether speed restrictions would be possible on the busy road.

He said: “They said it may well not be suitable for speed restrictions because it is a main road and speed restrictions are not as easy to install, but they offered to come out and conduct a speed survey.

“The town council and I have agreed that I should now go forward officially and ask for a speed survey to be done.”

William Marsh, a resident of Colchester Road, started campaigning after having several drivers destroy the wall at the front of his property within the space of a few months.

Mr Marsh said: “Obviously it makes me feel a bit better that something is being done and hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

“My wall being knocked down is dramatic but it is not the loss of a life and quite easily somebody could have been walking along the road when those cars hit.”

The campaigner said he would continue to liaise with the town council and the police about the issue.
