HALSTEAD’S MP met with Barclays branch bosses to discuss plans for when its High Street bank closes.

James Cleverly met with with representatives from the bank on Saturday but said he could not “demand they did not close the branch”.

The bank is set to close on September 1, blaming the increasing trend of online banking. The nearest branch will be in Braintree.

Mr Cleverly said: “I knew I was not in a position to convince them not to do it but I wanted to make sure that they had planned for the impact that it was going to have on local businesses and local users.

“We discussed things like encouraging businesses to use more card payments, how they can help vulnerable users and online banking.

“They did have a plan in place and we went through that and they have done an analysis of people who use only the Halstead branch and have no access to other branches.”
