A MEETING will be held to tackle the low level of water in Halstead’s river.

Last year, the Gazette reported the river was at risk of emptying after the Environment Agency confirmed the sluice gates at Townsford Mill had broken and could not be easily repaired.

With both Anglia in Bloom and Britain in Bloom judges due to visit the town this summer, there are concerns that unattractive water levels could affect judging.

Last year, the Environment Agency explained the situation to judges, and with Halstead coming out on top, they were clearly undeterred.

The Environment Agency will meet both Halstead Town Council and Halstead in Bloom in June to discuss potential plans before a public consultation.

Julia Smith, secretary of Halstead in Bloom, said: “We have been invited to a meeting with the Environment Agency and the town council in June, to discuss their plan before it goes into public consultation.

“We understand they have plans, but it is frustrating for us, and the whole town really because the river is a huge asset.

“Last year when it came to judging, the Environment Agency sent someone to talk to the judges, and explain the situation, which obviously worked.

“We can only hope that they agree to do the same again.”

The town council insists councillors are doing their utmost to resolve the issue.

Halstead Town Mayor, Shirley Diver, said: “We are doing our best to keep up to date with the situation regarding the river.

“It is quite an important issue, not only for us but also for the environment.

“People are asking questions and are concerned, rightfully so. Unfortunately these things do take a lot of time, but the town council is concerned and will be doing their best to stay on top of the issue.”
