A COMMITTED pair are fundraising for supplies to donate to a shanty town in Cape Verde.

Ashlie Montanjees, 23, has visited the island on a number of occasions, subsequently seeing first hand the terrible conditions families have to live in.

The former Ramsey Academy student is being joined on the trip by Ella White, 18, and the duo are hoping to raise £1,000 which will all be spent on supplies for locals.

Ashlie said: “We started going out there about four years ago now, and my partner lives out there.

“The families there are in extreme poverty, they live in shacks which they have made themselves and only have access to water once a week.

“We have become friends with a lot of the families and every time we go out there it breaks our hearts to see the conditions they live in.

“Last year we must have spent about £100 on water to give them, and the reaction we got was amazing but there just isn’t enough to go around. This time we want to go back with our fundraising money in hand and be able to make an actual difference.”

The pair are set to host a cake and coffee morning to raise funds, as well as giving up food for five days each.

Ashlie and Ella are planning to film the whole trip, creating a video diary that will document their donations.

Ashlie added: “We plan to film the whole trip and create a bit of a video diary. We will film us buying the supplies in all the little shops on the way and film us handing it all over.

“A few of the children can speak English, so hopefully they will speak to the camera for us and it will be an amazing to look back on.

“We are both really excited now and looking forward to getting out there and making a difference.”

The pair will host the coffee morning on April 8 at 117 Whitehorse Avenue.
