A CYCLING enthusiast is doing more than his fair share in the battle against cancer with a “monstrous” 965 mile challenge.

Geoff Bowen, of Saffron Gardens, Wethersfield, will cycle from Land’s End to John O’ Groats over nine gruelling days in September.

The 44-year-old is willing to put himself through the gruelling ride in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support after hearing of a friend's wife who died aged just 33.

He said: “It is a monstrous challenge, and there is no doubt it will be tough.

“I am confident in being able to complete it, but I am hugely apprehensive.

“About four years ago I did the London to Paris ride, but this will be something else.

“It will be relentless for nine days, but it is a personal challenge and a chance to push myself.”

Geoff decided to fundraise for Macmillan after a close friend’s wife passed away aged 33, and one of his colleague’s wife is currently battling terminal cancer.

As he states on his Just Giving page, he is fundraising £5,000 “because cancer sucks” and is passionate about the work the charity do.

Geoff added: “There are three reasons why I chose Macmillan really. I work for Travis Perkins and they are the company’s charity of choice.

“One of our friends in the village lost his wife at a very young age, which is a horrible experience for anyone to go through, and one of my col - league’s wife is currently battling cancer.

“While I wanted this to be a personal challenge and personal achievement, I want to be able to give something back.

“They do fantastic work, and hopefully £5,000 will help them continue.

“It sounds like a large amount, but I really am determined to reach that goal.”

Geoff is set to host a charity casino night at the Wethersfield Club, Old Mill Chase on May 28.

Geoff is on the lookout for any potential raffle prizes from residents or businesses.
