A DAUGHTER has thanked a teenager who tried to save her dad's life on a bus.

Glenys Clegg got a call from Broomfield Hospital to say her dad John Howarth, a former Halstead bus driver, had suffered a heart attack.

She was told someone carried out CPR on him for 25 minutes, but failed to recover in hospital.

After speaking to the Times Mrs Clegg managed to find the man who did his best to save Mr Howarth, 80.

Mrs Clegg, 55, of Brendon Drive, Halstead, received a message on Facebook from Sarah McEwan, who said her son Jake, 19, had helped him.

Mrs Clegg said: "It was so lovely, it turns out he is a local lad from Gosfield.

"It was really nice to talk to him, I spoke to him on Saturday and he said he was behind my dad on the bus and noticed he was falling forward.

"He managed to catch him and call for help, there was a surgeon on the bus who performed CPR and the bus driver helped.

"They managed to get his heart starting again, it was nice to know where it happened and who was with him."

Mr Howarth had visited wife Thelma in Braintree Nursing Home before catching a bus at Braintree Bus Park to his home in London Road, Great Notley. It happened at about 1pm on November 4.

Mrs Clegg found out someone from First Bus took all the details of those involved.

Jake was on the bus on his way back to work when the incident happened.

She said: "I would like to speak to them and find out who the surgeon was and thank them, and the bus driver.

"We have invited Jake to my dad's wake so we can buy him a drink and say thank you personally.

"It's closure as we just wanted to know what happened and although the outcome was what it was, it gave us a chance to say goodbye.

"For a young man as well he didn't panic.

"His mum was very proud of him."

A funeral service is being held at the Three Counties Crematorium in Braintree and a burial will follow in Bocking.

The wake is being held today, Friday, at The Locomotive pub in Halstead.
