HALSTEAD Bowls Club is looking for new members.

As the weather begins to show signs of improving and the nights begin to draw out, it’s time to welcome the start of the outdoor bowls season.

The green opened last Friday, signalling the end of the winter season and the start of the summer one.

The club started in 1921, originally as part of the sports club for the Courtaulds factory.

It has been in the town since its inception and plays on the Courtaulds Sports Ground of Colchester Road.

There are currently in excess of 100 members, but the club is open to people of all ages.

It is a members club run solely by the members and owns its clubhouse, which members built, on the north side of the green.

In the winter the club runs carpet bowls afternoons for members on Tuesdays and Thursdays and also puts on entertainment events.

The club is affiliated to Bowls England playing under EBA rules.

There are always fully qualified, friendly coaches on hand to give tips and advice to new players, with no commitment to join.

The open day will take place on May 8 at the club’s green from 10am.

Everyone is welcome to attend – just bring flat shoes and the other equipment will be provided.

Following the open day, the club’s Monday night club evenings will begin again.

This is an opportunity for everyone to have a try at the game in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

They start at 5.30pm at the club’s green.

The club has eight weekend fixtures and 26 midweek friendlies lined up for the coming season, as well as the Sudbury triples league, which provides an opportunity for less experiences bowlers to have a go at competitive game play.
