A man who underwent a kidney transplant is competing in a national competition to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.
Steve Fry, 37, of Halstead, is taking part in archery, badminton and volleyball competitions as he represents Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, in Newcastle, which started on Thursday.
Steve had a kidney transplant three years ago after nearly a year on dialysis when his kidneys failed due to a rare genetic disease called Alport's Syndrome.
Alport syndrome is characterized by kidney disease, hearing loss, and eye abnormalities.
It affects roughly one in 10,000 people in the UK.
Steve’s wife, Katie, said: “Steve didn’t know a lot about the condition or kidney failure and was taken to hospital with just six per cent of his kidney working three years ago."
