Not enough is being done to stop the bad smell from Halstead’s waste plant, residents have claimed.

Those leaving near Tamar Energy’s anaerobic digestion plant, in the Bluebridge Estate, have complained there has been a bad smell coming from the site since it started testing in July.

Now, there are fears the smell could ruin the summer for those living near by.

Brenda Lake, 65, who has lived off of Halstead Road for 33 years, said: “Once again, we have had another terrible weekend of smells, even into our house last Saturday when I left the conservatory door open for a while.

“A friend visiting could not believe how bad the smell was and in fact could taste it in her mouth.

“I have sent another email to Tamar as well as continual reports to the Environment Agency but there is still no improvement.

“With the summer coming, we will never be able to have a window or door open, let alone sit in the garden.

“How is someone able to get away with this for such a long amount of time?

“Before any of this building was erected, why did Tamar not thoroughly research the terrible impact on the local community that the smells from their plant would create?

“And also the various councils involved should have realised that by sanctioning the building of this plant right near residential areas that occupants would suffer.”

Kyrone Dodd, head of plant operations at Tamar Energy, said: “We’re continuing to carry out a series of robust ‘stress-tests’ to make sure the AD facility meets our strict requirements, and is working well within the levels set out by the Environment Agency.

“As part of our commitment to be a good neighbour, we’re also in ongoing contact with those living nearest to our facility to listen to and act on any concerns they may have.”
