A new event is set to launch in Halstead’s Public Gardens - and there are hopes for a return of the carnival as well.

The Friends of Halstead Public Gardens are planning to start the new event celebrating May Day and inspired by the maypole dancing which schools used to take part in at the public gardens.

They are seeking a May Queen to oversee the celebrations in Halstead’s Public Gardens on May 4.

There will be a children's fancy dress parade with a nursery rhyme theme, May pole dancing and music performed by students from the Ramsey School.

The group is also considering holding a friendly dog show.

The event will start at 2pm and see the arrival of the May Queen in a 1972 purple camper van.

If anyone knows a young woman aged between 13 & 16 who would like to be nominated as May Queen please send in nominations explaining why they should be chosen.

The young lady will be treated to a nail treatment and hair styling - if wanted - on the day before being collected and driven to the event.

Linda added: “The time old tradition is a huge honour and accolade for the young lady but is also considered the personification of spring and summer.”

Nominations can be emailed to wennhilton@hotmail.com
