Architects designing a new community centre for Halstead are going back to the drawing board after draft plans were too expensive to build.

Mathews Serjeant Architects, based in Rayleigh, drew up proposals for a building to replace the Senior Citizens Centre in New Street but they were found to be over budget.

The Halstead Community Centre Charitable Company had estimated that it would cost £1.5million to build the new hub, however a quantity surveyor has now revealed that more funding is needed for the project.

The company would not disclose how much extra money needed to be raised until further plans were drawn up but insisted it will find the cash.

Braintree Council has already pledged £650,000 and Halstead Town Council is considering selling Queens Hall in Chipping Hill to raise the cash.
