Campaigners fighting for the A120 to be upgraded claim it needs £10million of Government funding to take the scheme forward.

The Haven Gateway Partnership is leading a project to upgrade the notorious route between Braintree and Harwich.

It says £4million needs to be spent on a feasibility study between Braintree and Marks Tey and a further £6million on safety improvements at two dangerous junctions, including the Earls Colne turn off in Coggeshall.

Steve Clarke, Haven Gateway Partnership director for the A120, said now was time to "make a fuss" with Stansted Airport's potential expansion and councils being asked to forecast development plans.

He added: "Decisions could well get taken over the next six months or so, which means this road needs to get back on the agenda.

"We want to make a fuss now and get businesses focused on the issue."

Haven Gateway believes investment in the A120 could lead to £1.3billion in growth for the local economy, 13,000 new jobs and cut journey times by 56 per cent.
