A group is hoping to capture people’s memories of Halstead during the Second World War.
Halstead 21st Century Group, formed in January last year to oppose Tesco’s plans to build a supermarket on land east of the high street where there are several air raid shelters, are starting an oral history project to build a picture of wartime Halstead.
Helen Wolf, from the group, said: “We are not expecting a huge number of people to come forwards due to the age of the people we would need to talk to, but we want to speak to anyone who remembers any part of Halstead during the Second World War - including the Anglo-American Club, the Italian and German prisoners of war and the Women’s Voluntary Service.”
