The gentlemen of Earls Colne were wielding the willow on the village cricket fields even before the great W.G. Grace became a sporting hero in the national game.

Records of the first cricket matches in the village go way back to 1838 and Earls Colne Cricket Club is set to mark this unusual 175th anniversary with a week of special events at its ground in Halstead Road in June.

Most of the early fixtures in the village were arranged by the village squire, although there are records of games between the Colnes and Halstead as far back as 1862.

Chairman Les Abbie said: “The anniversary is a timely reminder that those of us who are around at the moment are the custodians of a long and honourable tradition which we should work hard to keep going for another 175 years and beyond."
