More than 7,000 discount cards for shops in Braintree and Witham have been handed out.

The Indi Card, organised by Braintree Council and supported by the Times, encourages residents to shop locally and more than 50 businesses have signed up so far.

Cards will be handed out in Newlands Shopping Centre, Witham, on December 8 from 10am to 3pm and in Halstead High Street on December 1 from 10am to 3pm.

They are also available from the Times office and participating shops.

people prefer to shop online not only do you save money you can find whatever your looking for and get it sent to your door and the upside to it as well is that you don't have to deal with people.

i for once went shopping in chelmsford yesterday and went to HMV have not been there for a very long time 5+ years i bought 4 films now when i walked out the shop the alarm went off so i stopped i then had to open my bag to show all i had was the films i just bought the guy scanned them again and it was fine however what made my blood boil was the amount of people looking at me as a theif lol moments like this **** me off and i will not go back and buy from there again, town centres will die off you will just have supermarkets times have changed

I have experienced this too. Because the staff can't be bothered to check that they haven't left tags in clothes you get to the door and the alarm goes off. Most annoying! I shop on line and collect in store, usually out of town ones. That way you can always get what you want. Braintree High Street is DEAD. Feel sorry for the small shops who try like La Maison and what do George Yard do? They let another shop of the same limited style open up too!!
