PROACTIVE patrols and intelligence-led arrests have played a vital role in the fight against graffiti in Colchester.

In the south of the town alone, ten people were arrested for causing criminal damage by graffiti over the past four months.

The result was hailed as “excellent” by Sgt Katie Mead, fo Colchester police.

She said: “New Town, in particular, has had a problem with graffiti in the past. We’re really pleased that our efforts in this area are having such significant results.

“Graffiti is really not pleasant to look at and it can also be very intimidating for people to walk past, especially the elderly. We are now committed to wiping out this problem entirely.”

One of the team’s most recent successes included the arrest and subsequent caution of a 35-year-old-man from Colchester who was seen spray-painting the word “hello” on a wall in Military Road earlier this month.
