Halstead: 'Run pylons underground through Braintree'

A bid to run 10 miles of electricity cables through Braintree instead of the Halstead countryside has sparked a furious debate.

Protest group Stour Valley Underground are angry at National Grid’s proposals to build a 400,000 volt pylon line from Bramford to Twinstead, with a football pitch-sized substation at Castle Hedingham.

They believe the pylons would ruin swathes of countryside and had wanted the energy company to bury the cables underground.

Group chairman, David Holland, has now written to National Grid suggesting it move the connection project out of the area completely and over to Braintree Freeport.
