Sir Alan Haselhurst - consummate House of Commons host

DEPUTY speaker Sir Alan Haselhurst, a cricketing novelist, hosted 55 banqueting functions at the House of Commons between April 1, 2004 and September 30, 2009.

No fewer than 26, which is just under half, were cricket-related.

House of Commons functions need an MP present, but costs are paid by the parties themselves.

Approximately 3,109 people enjoyed the Halstead MP's company on the terrace, in the club room, Churchill dining room or members dining rooms during this period. Details of banqueting functions emerged today on the same day as Sir Thomas Legg's report into which MPs should pay back what from their expenses claims.
