PARACETAMOL can protect against kidney failure after severe muscle injury, scientists at Essex University have concluded.
Tens of thousands of people every year suffer from rhabdomyolysis-induced renal failure, caused by muscle injuries, drug abuse and intensive exercise.
The condition is a particular problem for people who have been crushed, such as people trapped in buildings after earthquakes.
An international team of researchers found that paracetamol reduces the damage caused to the kidneys.
Further clinical trials will be required before paracetamol can be accepted as an effective clinical treatment for the condition.
