Praise for council as jobs saved

Nature lovers thanked a council for saving posts which were facing the axe.

Braintree Council, which is looking to save up to £1.5 million, had thought about cutting posts in its landscape services department.

The move would have been part of a raft of cuts and changes the authority is proposing.

But after hinting community landscape officers could be under threat it was confirmed at a cabinet meeting on Monday that the council had changed its mind.

Graham Butland, council leader, said: “We have had a change of heart and are happy to say we are not taking away support for the valuable volunteer groups.”

It means countryside projects across the district can continue.

Dermod Malley, of Halstead Conservation Group, said: “I’m pleased to have received a letter telling me you will not delete the service.

“I want to thank you. The Braintree district contains 251 local wildlife sites just over an eighth of the wildlife sites in the county. They provide an important indication of the state of health of the district’s environment.”
