Pebmarsh’s popular billy cart race pulled in the crowds on Saturday.
There were 22 entrants with one no show and a second billy cart which broke an axle on the way to the start line.
The billy carts were scrutinised outside the village’s Kings Head pub before the remaining 20 raced five rounds in soaring temperatures in front of cheering spectators.
Rebecca Cole from Halstead and Siobhan Hatswell from Braintree were the only girls to take part in what was the village’s fifth race.
The event raised about £2,500 after costs, which will be shared between St John the Baptist Primary School, Breast Cancer Care and an animal shelter in Colne Engaine.
Organiser Kerrie Harrington of Cross End, Pebmarsh, said: “It was a brilliant day and the weather was perfect.
“It was lovely to see such a big crowd.”
