With reference to the letter in last week’s Gazette, well done Barbara Carr, in a few caustic words you have managed to upset all the volunteers who work so hard to clear, clean and brighten Halstead for the benefit of residents, those who work in the town and our many visitors.

In a few days we will know if Halstead has achieved a tenth gold medal in a row from Anglia in Bloom and if the town has been marked as the Best Town in Anglia in Bloom for the tenth year in a row.

Is that not a source of pride?

Have you not noticed the cleaned and painted street furniture?

The In Bloom team and Partnership work hard to ensure the town looks great.

Have you not seen the Rivercare team cleaning the river and river banks on the first Sunday of each month.

Is that not something to be proud of?

You are very welcome to join the community litter pick on the last Sunday of each month and see the young people, and older people too, helping to clear the carelessly tossed litter around the town.

If you aren’t then you should be proud that youngsters care enough to to give up time to make Halstead tidier.

The river, yes, doesn’t do the town any favours, but the section between Town Bridge and the Mill is the subject of legal wrangles and can only be settled by the parties involved.

But it is no good just writing and making political points in the local newspaper.

If you see something that needs attention speak to the person, agency or council who can make rectification.

If you don’t know to whom you should speak, Halstead Town Council will give assistance.

With regard to the High Street and market, it is widely recognised shopping habits have changed with much demand for online shopping, but Halstead does still have some excellent independent shops and services.

Look around, you will find much in Halstead to be proud of.
