Bank staff have taken part in a 201 mile bike challenge to raise funds for a hospice.

Saffron Building Society, in Halstead High Street, opted to tackle a gruelling static bike ride after signing up to Birkett Long’s £50 challenge.

The scheme sees the solicitors hand businesses £50 to kickstart a fundraising campaign in aid of St Helena Hospice.

It took Saffron Building Society staff two days to complete the ride, along with the help of fellow employees in the bank’s head office.

The team started fundraising back in June with a cake bake sale, followed by a World Cup sweepstake to launch this year’s activity before embarking on the cycling challenge.

More than £600 has been raised so far and all proceeds will go to St Helena.

Branch manager Simon O'Donnell said: "Our building society has a long history of supporting the community. We have had links with St Helena Hospice for a few years now.

"They have a shop opposite us in the high street so it seemed like an obvious charity to support. The cycle trial was great fun although I have to admit I ache a little now - but it was worth it."
