The fire service teamed up with a council to give residents free safety advice.
Braintree Council organised a Home Fire Safety exhibition with Essex Fire and Rescue Service at Braintree Town Hall, on Wednesday, July 25.
The event gave residents an opportunity to speak with fire officers about keeping safe in the home.
Homeowners were also encouraged to sign up for a Home Fire Safety visit, which includes the fitting of a smoke alarm free of charge
A spokesman for Braintree Council said: "We had 12 referrals to have home visits and smoke detectors installed. Each could save a life one day."
Another event will take place in Queen's Hall, in Chipping Hill, Halstead, on Tuesday, August 28, between 9.30am and 3pm.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
