Volunteers and runners are celebrating the fourth birthday of Great Notley parkrun.

The all-inclusive event also marks the third year of the junior parkrun, for children between four and 14.

All abilities can get involved and get active, whether walking, jogging or running.

Despite the extreme temperatures, parkrunners turned up in their hundreds for the birthday events, where organisers invited people to dress up as pirates or favourite hero at the junior event.

Braintree Council chairman Vanessa Santomauro said: “I was delighted to visit parkrun at its two birthday events and have been impressed by the number of people who take part.

“parkrun is a wonderful non-competitive initiative which allows everyone to enjoy the fresh air, get active and take part.”

The organisation began in Teddington in 2004, with just 13 runners.

After two years a group formed in Wimbledon and spread across the world.

Cllr Peter Tattersley, responsible for health and communities, said: “We are very happy to be supporting an activity which is accessible to all and I would encourage anyone to go and give parkrun a try.

“The health of residents is a priority for Braintree Council and parkrun fits in with our be well strategy; encouraging residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle and become more active.”

The 5km run for adults takes place every Saturday and Junior parkrun is a 2km run which takes place every Sunday, both at 9am in Great Notley Country Park.

Great Notley event director Len Marten said: “We are so proud of our runners who turn up week in and week out. I am so thankful to all of our volunteers.”
