A gang of 20 youths attacked a teenage girl in Witham after shouting racial abuse.

A girl and a boy, both their teens, were approached by a group of up to 20 youths yesterday evening (Thursday, July 12) in Maldon Road, close to Newlands Shopping Centre.

They then racially abused the girl before hitting her from behind as she ran.

The gang fled the scene and the girl was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We were called at around 7.30pm yesterday, Thursday, July 12, to an assault in in Maldon Road, Witham.

"We received reports that a girl and a boy, aged in their teens, were approached by a group of up to 20 youths"
