A boxing club has donated hundreds of pounds to Colchester Hospital.

The Mary Barron suite, which specialises in chemotherapy, has been handed more than £600 by Halstead Boxing Club.

The club is a key supporter of the ward and has once again named the suite as its chosen charity for the coming 12 months.

Head coach George Cook said: “I had cancer in 2007 and ever since then I have been raising funds for the suite.

“I underwent six months of chemotherapy there and to see the nurses work the way they did was just amazing and I want to give something back to them.”

Halstead Boxing club has chosen the Mary Barron Suite to be its named charity for more than a decade now and has previously raised thousands of the pounds.

Much of this year’s donation came from Halstead Road Runner Gavin Allen, who had raised hundreds of pounds when competing in the London Marathon.

He agreed to combine his proceeds with the boxing club’s and donate it to the Mary Barron Suite.

Head coach Mr Cook says he has plans to complete his own fundraising mission to raise funds for the charity.

He added: “I’m planning on abseiling off Colchester Town Hall in September.

“I’m still sorting out the details for it but hopefully it will help to raise some more money.”
