An internationally renowned covers band has joined forces with a charity for people with learning difficulties to record a fundraising single.

D’Ukes - celebrated as the “finest ukelele band in the world” - have teamed up with Braintree District Mencap to record a version of James’ 90s classic tune Sit Down.

The song is set to be released as part of Learning Disability Week 2018, and a launch event is being held at Braintree Town Hall on Friday evening.

Yvette Wetton, chief executive officer of Braintree District Mencap, said: “We are so proud of our members at Braintree District Mencap, who chose this song, and it’s been such a pleasure working with D’Ukes to create this charity single.”

The popular band, who have toured extensively worldwide and performed on national television, have built a lasting relationship with the charity and performed many times at its Gateway Club - a weekly social club for adults with a learning disability.

They’ve built a reputation for their lively reinterpretation of classic songs, and Mencap members choose their latest cover.

All of the profits raised from sales of the single will go towards ensuring the future of the group and help support Mencap’s work with residents from across the district.

Ms Wetton said: “The proceeds will help us keep offering support to more than 800 children and adults with a learning disability across the region.”

The launch party takes place at Braintree Town Hall, in Fairfield Road, on Friday from 7pm.

CD versions of the single will be available to the public for £5 on the night and afterwards from Mencap’s base at Charles Leeks House, in Coggeshall Road, Braintree.

Mencap offers support to people from the age of five-years-old right through adulthood.
