Halstead in Bloom has launched its annual garden competition as volunteers continue preparations ahead of a visit from the judges.

The in Bloom team will be seeking to defend their best town title when the Anglia in Bloom judges make their visit on Friday, July 13.

Residents are invited to take part in their own piece of gardening by signing up for the Local Garden Competition.

The competition features seven categories which include best front garden, back garden, patio/container garden, new/makeover garden, young person’s garden, allotments and kitchen garden.

Entry forms for the competition can be obtained at the town council offices at Queens Hall, although all competitors must apply before Friday, July 13.

The annual event aims to encourage residents to try their hand at gardening, while also helping to add to the overall upkeep of the town.

Julia Smith said the team was looking forward to the visit.

She said: “The team are busy planting out the summer bedding now with the town centre all complete and just some of the peripheral tubs and beds to do.

“Hanging baskets will be collected and put up very soon by Jason and Tim the ground workers for Halstead Town Council.”

“The In Bloom Partnership comprising of Halstead Town Council, Braintree District Council, Essex County Council and Halstead in Bloom with Halstead Rotary and Greenfield PH are working hard to get the town in tip top condition.”

Other groups helping to make the town look its best include the River Care group, which looks to clear the banks of the River Colne of rubbish and mess. The group’s next meeting takes place on July 8. A community litter pick will take place on Sunday, June 24.
