Plans to build nearly 100 homes on the edge of a village look set to be rejected.

Braintree Council’s planning officers have recommended Gladman Developments Ltd’s plans to build 98 homes on land to the east of Colchester Road in Bures be refused.

The application has proven unpopular with residents in the village, with more than 200 letters of objection sent to the council.

Bures Hamlet Parish Council has also objected to the application, which included a mix of one, two and three bedroom houses.

As part of a report which will be put before councillors next week, planning officers say the development would harm the countryside setting in which it would be based.

The report said: “The proposal would introduce a sizeable new development to an area of open countryside and of landscape quality which positively contributes to the rural setting and amenity of the neighbouring settlements.

“The location of the site and topography of the land are such that any development on this site would have a harmful impact upon the distinctive rural character and appearance of the area.

“It is therefore considered that the proposal fails to take account of the function the site serves in landscape terms and would be harmful to a valued landscape, the intrinsic character and beauty of the countryside.”

Officers also pointed out that Gladman had failed to indicate how much it was willing to contribute towards healthcare, education and public open spaces in Bures.

A final decision over whether to approve or refuse planning permission will be made during a meeting on Tuesday.
