It's no secret that residents in Halstead have been calling out for more officers patrolling their streets for some time.
The police station in Trinity Street shut its doors two years ago and residents have noticed a distinct lack of bobbies on the beat.
Combined with an increase in a fear of crime, which is just as important to deal with as crime itself, it has become clear in recent months that a police presence in Halstead was needed.
That’s why we have seen the town council follow nearby Witham’s lead and fund its own volunteer officers.
There will rightly be questions about whether three part time officers is enough in terms of tackling anti-social behaviour in the town.
But putting officers back on the streets of the town is a step in the right direction and will be welcomed.
