A NEW £13,000 sign warning motorists if they are going too fast is set to be installed on a village road despite experts warning it will be ineffective.

Essex County Council's highways boss Ian Grundy has signed off on the scheme to install a vehicle activated sign on the eastern side of the B1027 in Alresford just 120 metres after the 40mph limit comes into force.

Alresford Parish Council has agreed to contribute £7,000 towards to the project which will include cutting back nearby plants and trees to ensure the sign is visible.

Parish councillors and Alan Goggin, the county councillor for the village, had raised concerns about vehicles travelling too quickly along the road.

The experts recommended another site was found and conducted a survey which showed the average speed was 45mph - not usually fast enough for a sign to be introduced.

But Mr Grundy rubberstamped the plans last week.
