A terminally ill man has been granted his final wish to spend the rest of his life at home with his wife.

Ashley Jones, 30, has been living in St Helena Hospice in Colchester ever since he was told treatment for bowel and liver cancer was no longer working and the disease had spread to his lungs.

Now wheelchair bound, Mr Jones had been unable to return home with wife Victoria because their second floor flat along Conies Road, Halstead, was inaccessible.

The couple had been desperately looking to find a new ground floor property more appropriate for Ashley’s needs and had appealed to Braintree Council to help their efforts.

And after two months of searching, the couple have finally found and secured a bungalow in Halstead, which will allow Ashley to spend the rest of his life at home with wife Victoria.

She said: “When we got the email to say we could view the bungalow we were hopeful and it was a yes straight away after seeing it.

“I don’t think it has sunk in yet.

“It will give Ashley his independence back and he can go out when he wants rather than having to rely on help from me.

“We have family and friends in Halstead and our son is buried here so it will mean a lot to get him home.”

The couple are hopeful they will receive the keys for their new property today.

They then hope to move into the bungalow on Monday, when the tenancy will begin.

Victoria added: “It will be a case of moving the essentials in and having everything Ashley needs.

“I can move the rest of our bits in after that but the main thing is to get him back home.

“It felt like we were getting nowhere and the chances of getting somewhere were slim.

“But we are really happy to have sorted it. Finally, we have had a bit of good news.”

The couple’s son five-month old son George tragically died last year after he was born with his organs growing outside his body.
